Huffman High School’s basketball program will host its annual MLK Viking Classic Saturday. Fourteen high school and six middle school teams representing Alabama and Georgia will compete in the one-day event.
Instead of a traditional tournament, where teams play multiple games, each team will play in a single game. The Classic is designed for top teams and players from different states to have the opportunity to compete on one, large platform.
In a press release, Huffman High School Principal John Lyons Jr. said the showcase will be an exciting day of basketball featuring teams that don’t typically compete, and it will give them the opportunity to develop new skills and strategies.
Huffman has held the Classic for more than six years and has welcomed teams from Florida, Tennessee, Georgia and the host state, Alabama.
A notable game on the girls’ side that will feature an Ole Miss signee and some of the most highly recruited talent in Alabama is the defending 6A state champion Homewood Patriots taking on the undefeated, defending 5A state champion Wenonah Dragons. The Dragons are also ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 24 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national rankings.
A game to watch on the boys’ side is Wenonah going head-to-head with the Vikings, who will enter the game with a 14-4 record. For more matchups and game times, visit www.huffmanbasketball.com.
The showcase tips off Jan. 16 at 9 a.m and admission is $5. Huffman is located at 950 Old Springville Rd. in Birmingham.
